associated problems, eg marital instability, underachievement at work, drug misuse, a family history of ADHD. disorganisation, inability to complete tasks. Hyperactivity and inattention must be present in adulthood, together with two of six other symptoms: It's based on the Utah Criteria for adult ADHD, which is more consistent with ADHD symptoms shown in adulthood than the DSM5. The Wender Utah scale is commonly used in adults. They may also be used by a specialist to distinguish ADHD from other conditions. To overcome this, rating scales have been developed for adults that ask detailed questions about your behaviour. One problem with making a diagnosis in adulthood is that the DSM5 criteria used were developed for children, not adults. 
In the UK, the usual way of diagnosing ADHD is to apply the criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition (DSM5). Up to date criteria for diagnosis is that ADHD symptoms must be present before the age of twelve, and it may be hard for you to be sure about this as an adult. There's no simple 'one stop' test for diagnosing ADHD. But if a lot of this sounds familiar, and you can recall these symptoms in childhood, it might help to speak to your family doctor about them. Not all people with ADHD have all these symptoms.
Have you lost jobs because of poor time-keeping or because it's hard for you to stick to a task?. Are you disorganised at work and at home?. Do you start projects and then abandon them?. Do people say: 'I never know where I am with you'?. Are you known to have a hot temper and mood swings?. Are you sometimes in difficult situations because you have reacted angrily or even violently?. Do you find it hard to stop and think before doing or saying anything?. Are you generally restless and unable to sit still for as long as others?. Are you told you fidget a lot of the time?. If you're an adult with ADHD, you may have learned to keep some of your behaviour under control some of the time. 
This is because some of the most obvious signs of ADHD may not be quite so marked because of your maturity. The signs of ADHD present during childhood, but in an adult they are less easy to spot. Some adults with ADHD are only diagnosed after their own child has received a diagnosis. If you're a parent with ADHD, you're likely to be on the lookout for the inherited tendency in your own child.
There are often so called 'co-morbidities' – other associated conditions affecting mood and behaviour, such as depression or anxiety. 
A driver with ADHD is at an increased risk of driving offences and accidents. There's an increased risk of criminality and substance misuse. In adults, employment prospects may be compromised. Untreated, ADHD can affect all aspects of life.
